Long hours, close bonds and rigorous intellectual challenges. That is how I would describe the summer I spent as an apprentice at a local mechanic shop near my house. At the time, I had just been accepted to transfer to UT Austin and was still unsure of the profession I would pursue.…

Just thinking about all the good times I would have like camping, swimming, and playing baseball with my team, the Aces, had me giddy. I remember the day I stepped onto the airplane in Ufa to the United States nine years ago. I was sitting next to another girl from my city, who was also flying to Williamsburg, Virginia to work and learn English. We talked for a little before take-off and I could see she was bursting with emotions and started to cry her eyes out. She was trembling with anxiety and fear, whimpering about how much she was leaving behind. In contrast, I sat in my seat very still, with a huge smile on my face, gleaming with anticipation of the adventure I was about to begin.…

However, my Summer Vacation would not consist of long days spent at a beach or in an air conditioned room. No longer would Netflix be the only thing on my mind, one which school squeezed every last bit of patience and integrity out of. For me, the first day of my summer job was one of the most uncertain that I have ever experienced in my life.…
