I slowly stared at thee proof of my crime as the guilt was slowly eating me alive. I stared at the piece of paper that would determine the possibility my life and death. I made a glimpse at the paper one last time, Priya Patel 58/100, with a note saying “ Get signed by parent” as I took short breaths as I felt a heavy-load of trepidation, fear.
It was a Thursday afternoon 2:43 pm. At school it felt like The Jonathan Wakeman School had prisoned 23 people in a four walled room filled with posters I couldn’t care less about. With all this tragedy I was sitting there listening to Ms. G, the most boring voice in the entire fifth grade history of teacher tortures me everyday for 10 months. With all these thoughts in my head, hopefully their was some room for what Ms. G was trying say. Finally the

“ Are you ready for your test.” My mom asked. Panicking I took my book bag ad left for school leaving my hungry stomach empty so I could avoid her questions. When I got to school, it was time for the test, and I did not study. I knew this would be the cause of my future problems. I guessed the true or false questions the old fashion way for people who don’t study. “ True, True False, True. I handed my test in and started doing the work on the board. “ I will get these tests back to you after Lunch” Ms. G said. After lunch she had place a paper as white as snow on our desk. They were the results to my test. I read “ 58/100 with sadness and fear. I walked home and stomped my feet up the brown wooden stairs to my room. I took out my test and copied my Mom’s signature from my grade sheet onto my test as best as I could. Then I finished my remaining homework and went downstairs to eat. “ What did you get on your test? “ my mom asked. I didn’t want to tell her my grade, “ 85” I said trying to avoid eye contact. I took a nut bar and ran to my room in guilt. I kept thinking one thing. I had

The bell rang and the second quarter of my Kindergarten year at William Cullen Bryant Elementary ended. I grabbed my report card as I ran out into the light snow and spotted my mother's white 1997 Caravan by the stop sign, as usual. An enormous smile covers my face as I hop into the car, eager to show her I had prioritized my academics before sports, as she had asked me to. As soon as I was settled in, I handed her the envelope containing my pride. Proud of what I had accomplished, but to my dismay she gave me the “I’m disappointed look” and said, “Cullen”, her voice rising, “Why are there not one, but two threes on this report card?”…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

“Mia can you go walk A field and the corral?” my supervisor asked over the walkie-talkie as I finished bringing in fifteen excited dogs from group play. By this point I had already walked more than a dozen dogs, fed half the kennel, and taken out over a hundred dogs for one of their daily outings. I was exhausted and now I had to pick up a field full of dog feces.…

“You have three seconds to make your choice, write or I call your parents!!!” Those words shook me to the core. If my dad got another call for me being a bad student, he might destroy my TV. So there was no other option, I grabbed a marker and started writing on the whiteboard next to this random kid. The day has been already bad in the first three seconds, I cannot imagine how the rest of the day would be like.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

It was a typical Friday, school was off and the temperature was at its highest. At times like this I would stay home to avoid the sun; however, my friends insisted that I must join them for a soccer game and so I did. We used a garage as our field and aligned a few cement bricks to form the goals which we then typically argue about how un-even the alignments were. The sun slowly faded away as night approached so I excused myself and retreated home fearing the consequences of being breaking curfew.…

I could relate to with this word because there was a time where I felt I was going through it and experiencing a sympathetic division. It was Sunday in the afternoon and my little brother, who at the time is ten years old, was having his soccer game take place. Crowds around the field were very tense because of the two teams being big rivals. As well as the crowds be tensed up so were the players with each other. While the game went by there were many times in which the players were having conflicts with each other, causing the anger around everyone to increase.…

The first time I had a phone I was in elementary school, and had it for about 2 years. Then as life moved on, and events took place, I was not allowed to have one, and did not have one for almost two years. When I was in fourth or fifth grade I was allowed to have another one and kept it until the sixth grade. My dog had torn it apart, and because of financial reasons, there was only one phone in the house, between three people, and it was a old slide up phone. Not a touch screen…

Faith is something that I learned from my own life lessons. Faith to me means many things. The first thing that comes to mind when I remind myself of faith when i’m feeling down, is going to church. During my junior year of highschool, just before I started my second semester, my parents sat myself and my two siblings down in our living room. They told us that they had something important to tell us, and that they had waited this long to tell us because they had wanted us to enjoy the holidays. The last time they had done something like this, they were telling us our great grandmother had passed away. I was immediately worried that I would be attending my second funeral in a span of two years. What came next left me hollow: we had to remove all of our animals from our property.…

Each society has its unique standards and expectations, but it feels as if the expectations of the society I grew up wove these beliefs within me: if I’m not perfect—it ultimately translates into the fact that you’re useless. If you do not receive good grades, or you’re not some math prodigy, you’re irrelevant. In a world fulfilled with talented individuals, I often wondered to myself, How will I ever be different from everyone else? How will I manage to survive in this society without being exponentially smart? Growing up in this type of stressful community, every single mistake that I made was not considered as a lesson I should learn from, instead were needles stabbing my heart, and the stinging sensation never leaving me.…
