One of my main goals is to pursue a career as a prestigious lawyer, fighting injustices throughout not only our Nation but the world as well, helping those in need, and one day I hope to accomplish that goal. Throughout life many children are faced with questions surfacing around what they hope to be in the future. At a very young age I had discovered that one day I would want to become a very successful lawyer, however, it wasn’t until my first year of college that I decided that I wanted my career to be focused on helping those who were wrongly convicted and in desperate need of a hand of help. North Shore Community College celebrated “Law Day” this year by having noted criminal defense attorney J.W. Carney as a guest speaker. He began his speech by addressing how his own Paralegal makes his job easier by keeping him organized, and having him stay on track by telling him what needs to be done. He gave the advice of “follow your dreams” to anyone starting out in the legal profession. Attorney Carney stated the reason he became a lawyer was inspiration from watching the show “The Defenders,” and from movies like, “Gideon’s Trumpet.” In the beginning of his career, he worked for five years at the public defender’s office, five years as a prosecutor and now is in private practice.…

I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system, but my interest in law school truly began in high school with experiences such as my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an advocate to give them a voice within the system. My interest in a legal career was further piqued during my attendance at Sunflower Girls State where I was able to attend a real trial with the District Attorney and participate in mock trials. Experiences such as these both inspired and encouraged me to set my goals towards law school.…

I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system; the concept has constantly been reaffirmed in my mind as new life experiences continue to lead me in that direction. The problem with that particular direction is that it has several paths to take, and deciding which path to take takes a lot of time and consideration in order to make the best choice. Over time, I have realized that my individual strengths and personality are best suited to succeed in the legal field rather than the political or law enforcement areas of the justice system. One of my first experiences that led me to this conclusion was my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

On the sixth of May, in nineteen ninety eight, there was a major change in my family. That change was a baby named Tyler. I haven’t been around for very long, but I have witnessed many things. In my 17 years, I have witnessed the fall of the twin towers, the election of the first African American president, Bin Laden captured, and many other things. I have learned that family comes first and that you should enjoy every moment with them, because everything can change in the blink of an eye.…

The trips were unplanned, as I have traveled to 13 different countries in four continents of the world. At least that was something to brag about after returning home from six years of military service. I would talk about these moments in a heartbeat when topics related to travel surface in conversations. Remembering and reliving those moments brings great fulfillment. Usually, there's a moment in life where I experience home in places I've visited.…

As a middle schooler nothing was better than the relief of stepping of the bus on a Friday afternoon free of homework free of worries. Walking down the street towards my house realization came upon me when reality caught up with what was happening. I approached our driveway the moving truck was being loaded my mom and dad home from work early and waiting there in the drive with a look on their faces like they had to explain how they killed someone. Days on end of constant pacing, hard work, and unnecessary social interaction. That’s pretty much what I see school as being in a majority of the time, but luckily, every year we get a 2 week vacation. Those are practically blessings for students and I’m sure teachers too. I never do anything but still, it’s a nice time to work on whatever I don’t have time to during school. I have a fairly packed schedule during the school year, so the 2 weeks are a nice time to catch up on sleep and T.V. shows.…

I kept a tight ship on most days, which led to one employee thinking that I was unfair.…

Over the past year I’ve gotten over the grudges that I have been holding onto for awhile, and as a result I’ve been thinking more positively this year. I was told by my father that if you make yourself more productive, time seems to go by faster. I didn’t listen to him…

Never have I been more overtaken by fear than when I was sandwiched between two four-foot tall fifth grade girls sporting clunky running shoes and skyscraper high ponytails framed by neon headbands. I sneakily glance at them while wiping my sweaty hands onto my bright blue t-shirt and sparkly leggings donning my school colors. Behind us, the high-pitch cheers from the spectators of the annual All Island Track Meet ring through my ears. Every year, fifth graders from the three elementary schools in our district flock to the local high school track vying for the revered title of best elementary school.…
