“Let’s be independent together!” my sister Molly, who has always protected my sister Kristi and me, said as we sat in our muggy garage packing our trunks for five weeks of camp in the unfamiliar mountains of North Carolina. Kristi and I had no desire to be away from our parents in a strange place for over 30 days. My parents told us we needed to be independent, and that having experiences away from home would help us in the long run. Molly’s reply to our fear was to tell us to be independent together. With this comment my worry seemed to escape me in a lot of ways. I realized that while I would be away from my parents, that I wasn’t alone. We had each other and we didn’t need anyone else. Little did I know that relying on each other

Independence plays a tremendous role in growing up. As adolescents, we learn how to be independent, from parents, guardians, and teachers, to prepare for adulthood. In the end of my sophomore year of high school, my parents went out of town for a few days to go up to Maine with their friends. They left me and my brothers, who are both adults, home alone. The last time they left for a few days, I had to stay with a babysitter.…

As an individual who was enormously pampered by her parents and greatly relied on her parents for everything throughout her life, moments that required me to become independent really pushed me to think for myself and work hard. From travelling to India alone at the age of eight to moving away for college, I had to make sure that my emotional ties to my parents wouldn’t prevent me from being independent and innovative. I refused to let life walk all over me, and instead pushed myself to overcome my fears and become my personal best. At such moments, I didn’t depend on my family to help me adjust to the new living environments, but rather took it upon myself to stay organized, plan out my day, and create my own living space. Instead of acting courageous and exclaiming how easy the transition would be, I acknowledged it would be difficult and focused more on getting myself back on my two feet.…

Involuntary independence has always been a part of my life. At the age of 10, my mother left our home with my older brother for three weeks, leaving me alone with my father. For the longest time my parents had marital conflicts that tore our family apart. Due to my father’s intense schedule, I was always awake for school after he left for work and off to bed before he came home. Naturally, I was confused and spiteful towards my situation.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Beginning junior year, I occupied myself with the most constructive investment in my life. My daily routine was bland, but oddly hailed as the ultimate path to victory. I was learning in school, but the learning lacked meaning. Plot lines and mathematical formulas were unavailing ideas, which I tepidly regurgitated. I concluded that a life permeated with monotonous toil was not worth celebrating on my day of judgment.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

Using natural language to communicate is, for the vast majority of us, something we do every day from a very young age. That said, when we look closely, communication is not without its fair share of hurdles. Indeed, is a fact of human social intercourse that individuals do not always say what they mean, or mean what they say in conversational contexts. In this paper, we will expound upon the issue of implicatures present in human communication, as described by Grice. In addition, we will present two related theories which attempt to elucidate how human beings are able to grasp what others mean with seemingly little effort.…

Days on end of constant pacing, hard work, and unnecessary social interaction. That’s pretty much what I see school as being in a majority of the time, but luckily, every year we get a 2 week vacation. Those are practically blessings for students and I’m sure teachers too. I never do anything but still, it’s a nice time to work on whatever I don’t have time to during school. I have a fairly packed schedule during the school year, so the 2 weeks are a nice time to catch up on sleep and T.V. shows.…

I still have nightmares about the week when I didn’t have a phone. In my senior year of highschool, my phone got stolen and it took about a week to get a replacement. That week was the longest week of my life. I found myself actually feeling sad and depressed without my phone, which is quite pathetic. When I would go out with friends, I realized just how much of our “hanging out” time actually consisted of us sitting in the same place, but in different worlds.…
