Personal Narrative: An Art Class

For the majority of the years before high school, I never really had an art class. It was quite sad since art and music were what I had looked forward to at the age of five. It wasn't until the fifth grade, I discovered my love for art. Although I wasn't taught any basics on how to do art, up until high school, I would still try and draw characters I loved, like Pokémon or Nintendo characters. I remember asking my mom to buy me computer paper just so I could draw Pokemon characters clearer because I didn't know what a sketchbook was until middle school. Entering The High School of Art and Design was practically a dream come true. I loved the experience of learning the fundamentals of art and practicing new media and techniques that I never …show more content…
It wasn't until junior year, I slowly began to form an idea as towards what I wanted not just as a career, but life in general. I majored in cartooning for three years, and that class was more than just a double period art class. It was the class where I found enlightenment in myself. With the given assignments and projects in the class, I figured what I liked to do and what I didn't like to do. I realized I love creating ridiculous story plots. That I love designing and writing characters based on how I analyzed and observed people around me. And that I love making people laugh through these childish stories and relatable characters. Obviously, there was tons of information I have yet to learn as a cartoonist and illustrator, but I am willing to dedicate my time to it. I know it won't be an overnight process, or a double period art class to learn all this. Attending SVA is a step closer to achieving this goal of becoming a greater artist. It’s more than just a step closer to becoming a concept artist, toy designer, storyboarder, or an art therapist. It’s a step closer into finding myself and sharing it with the world through

I start creating my work by replaceing traditional lighting associated with photgraphy with the lighting of tv screens. Then I continue following an image by also removing the figure as the main portion of the image , to make the figure less important. I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. “For very young children, making art -- or just talking about it- provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes, and actions” (Lynch). It is vital for a child to learn the importance of art early in their life so that they can choose whether or not they will be dedicated to pursue a career involving art skills. Learning about these basic forms of art at an early age gives children more insight in preparation for their educational life. “Although some may regard art education as a luxury, simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of child development” (Lynch). Students involved in simple creative activities within their peers can affect their emotional status and gives a more comforting feeling being around others that have similar qualities of enjoyment.…

It only goes to show that the question that more than likely receives the most generic answers from an audience, can also be the hardest to answer truthfully. What is art? If you were to ask a group of one thousand people that very question, the chances are that the majority of them would answer it by saying something along the lines of “It is and expression of yourself and how you feel” and “Painting, drawing, sculpting, and photographs.” I refuse to be restricted to these two categories, only to answer the same way all others have. That may make me seem stuck up in some way, however, I feel that I have a fairly unique understanding that not many think about.…
