Personal Narrative: Algebra

Improved Essays
Algebra 1 was a very difficult subject and concept for me to grasp. I struggled very hard, but still could not understand. I spent numerous hours studying, hoping that I finally understood the materials. I felt like I was a failure. I tried asking my teacher for assistance, but he never really helped me. I relied on online KhanAcademy videos, but I felt like I couldn't really learn by just watching those videos either. I felt hopeless, and eventually gave up.

When I went into my online, private high school, I was horrified to attempt Algebra again. I knew I had to, but I just did not want to. Of course, I had to do it anyways. My teacher was very helpful, and I understood! I did not feel like I was having trouble in the class. I passed the class with a 91 for the first part, and then an 88 for the second. Comparing this to the F I got for my freshman year, it felt like such an accomplishment! I was finally able to understand something I had struggled so hard with.

Once again, I was horrified of the concept. I thought that if I struggled in Algebra, then I would struggle in Geometry. Nope! I was very wrong. I actually did not have any issues in the class, just a few minor misunderstandings. I passed with an A for both parts of the

It was my first time in America. In 2015, I moved with my family permanently from India. Had few issues moving but managed to solve those issues without any difficulties. I was pumped to know about how each and everything used to function, how different the American system is from the Indian system?…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

What changes for MCbride is he starts to realizes that he can’t stay on the corner his whole life,he realizes that he has to try to make something out of himself. The moment that starts to define him was when he was almost killed messing around at the gas station. If I said I never fail i’d be lying,One example of my failure is when I Failed my Algebra class. This class was Honors Chemistry, it was extremely difficult and I tried everything I could possibly do to try to be successful in that class. I did extra homework, staying after school, and staying up remarkably late just to try to understand a concept that others seemed to fathom so easily. The feeling of failure from not doing strong in this class made me feel as if I could never understand this class. The feeling of failure for anyone is not an enjoyable feeling, it mostly can cause a stress on your life, when you know you are able to succeed. I decided to take the initiative and try as hard as I can to bring my grade up with the final exam.…

I was an average middle schooler: average in sports, academics, and in confidence. Being average caused me to doubt my abilities and have a negative view of myself. This took a turn, however, when I tested into Algebra a year early during the beginning of eighth grade. When this happened, I felt above average, like I was finally excelling at something. This didn’t last long because Algebra was a tough class that tested my abilities and my mind to their capacity.…

For as long as I can remember math was a struggle for me. I remember sitting on the couch for hours trying to memorize mathematical equations in elementary school. I was lucky back then, I had teachers who were willing to help me and even though I felt singled out I did appreciate it. It all changed in fifth grade for me. The teacher refused to assist me even when I tried to stay after school for help, I remember being so upset that I wasn’t doing well that my mother called and tried to reason with her.…

My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…
