Personal Narrative: Advanced Survival

Decent Essays
Since December, I have been working hard on running an outdoor education trip called Advanced Survival. Through POST, the outdoor education program at my high school, last weekend I successfully led a group of 40 students on a multi-day backpacking trip teaching about survival skills and appreciation of nature. This trip took countless hours of planning and preparation but was well worth it as everyone had an excellent time, even those who had never backpacked previously.
In addition, I have been preparing for the district Mock Trial competition that takes place this Saturday. Our goal is to move passed the district round and place in the state competition in March.

Every Life Matters I really only started understanding the meaning of abortion once one of my mom’s friends had one. Before that I had very little knowledge about abortion. My parents have always taught me to stand by what I believe and that others may have different beliefs. They always told me that I would meet people that would disagree with me and what I believe not only when it came to these kind of topics but many other things as well. Being told that, they told me to always respect people’s beliefs and their points of view because everyone has the right to stand by what they believe, just like I do.…

In today's society the average person goes through high school, then repeats the cycle through college, gets their degree and goes out into the “real world”. They meet someone, have a family and move out to the suburbs. That is the path that most americans take throughout their long journey in life. 2014 and 2015 were my fleeting lifespan's worst years. No major, life-or-death events happened. I just have felt so very alone even amongst friends and family. I can't bring myself to talk to anyone about what I'm feeling, this whole bundle of negative emotions constantly accumulating inside me. Talking to people about what I feel just makes me feel selfish, knowing how others are suffering more so.…

Outdoor experiential education programs offer valuable leadership opportunities and prompt development of both technical and interpersonal skills while at the same time allowing participants to enjoy the great outdoors. These programs teach participants how to communicate, plan and set goals, work on problem solving skills, and work as an effective team towards a common goal. Additionally, successful wilderness expeditions accentuate positive group dynamics, environmental awareness, and specific skill acquisition such as rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, or hiking. Although safety is a key component of any outdoor education program, exposure to risk may be equally important because it provides a means for certain educational opportunities that…

We were a few miles away before I saw the smoke, a dark giant against the bright blue sky.…

On Monday the 21st of August, the two year 10 Outdoor Ed classes travelled to Taylor’s Landing in the Port Lincoln National Park to begin a two day trek from Taylor’s Landing to September Beach on the first day, and September Beach to Fisherman’s Point on the second. The first day was a tough 20km hike along the coast, crossing beaches and following the path that journeyed along the National Park. The second day was an easy 8km from September Beach to Fisherman’s Point, along the Investigator Trail that travelled long into the distance. The purpose of the camp was to be tested both mentally and physically, for an introduction to bushwalking, build a relationship with classmates, and to gain experience in an area that was extremely unfamiliar…

Everybody makes mistakes, some more severe than others. However, not everyone has made mistakes that could have costed them their lives. For me, such an incident took place in March of 2017 when I crashed my car into a ditch. Although the experience was far from pleasant, I know I will never forget it or the valuable lessons it seared into my brain. I learned to always be aware while driving, and to make sure to stay focused.…
