Personal Narrative: A Walk In The Woods

“You can start whenever you’re ready” The boy looked down at his pale, shaking hands, then up at the ceiling. Anywhere except for the man with the clipboard in front of him. They had told him that if he came here, they would leave him alone. He took that to mean no more blinding lights being shown in his face, no more fake smiles, no more lies. “My mom made me some sandwiches. Peanut butter and jelly. My favorite. She spent all day making them. Just for me. She put them in a basket and told me I had to take them with me when I go out. I found myself drawn to the woods, since the other kids wouldn’t play with me. I didn’t like them much anyway; they always seemed a little too happy and immature for me. I walked through the woods, wandering …show more content…
One seemed old and worn, but it caught the sunlight perfectly. The second was dimmer, but not marked as much by use. Two roads diverged in that wood, and I, I took neither. I was weary of following a preset path, so I walked through the undergrowth, taking myself in a completely different direction. I had wanted to make my own path, but as I kept walking, I found that I once again, was walking along a premade path. A path I had not chosen to take. Along the way, I met all sorts of creatures. Most of them left me alone, but there was a handful that didn’t. The first one to approach me was a …show more content…
I just want to know what it is.’ I kept walking. I knew right away that it had its eye on my food. But my mom had made me the sandwiches, and I wasn’t going to let the squirrel have any. ‘It’s from my mom. You can’t have any.’ ‘Well where’s your mom now.’ I ignored the pesky squirrel. The path that I was walking on, however, took me to another problem. ‘Fine, I won’t ask you for what’s in the basket. I’m not that hungry anyway. Fortunately though, those birds over there look mighty hungry. Maybe you could share with them.’ I scoffed at the creature. Why didn’t it understand that I wasn’t sharing? I tried to stay away from the birds, but the path led me right to them. ‘Oh dear, that basket looks awfully heavy. Why don’t you let us carry it for a while?’ The pair of birds chirped at me, flying much too close for my liking. ‘I know what you’re trying to do. You can’t have any of my sandwiches!’ ‘Oh dear, we’re just trying to help you. Would you like something to eat.’ ‘No! I have my sandwiches and I’m not hungry

When I try to imagine that dead tiger shark in suspended animation, glorified in a steel box of formaldehyde, I can’t help but see it in motion. I see the walls of its glass cage expand into a murky kelp forest that masks its constant forward motion, just as Terry Tempest Williams mentions in her essay “A Shark in the Mind of One Contemplating Wilderness.” Though Williams addresses a broad range of issues in her work, this essay can be summarized quite easily: in order for us as humans to understand and appreciate something, we have to kill it—or pause it—to do so. “Even in death, I see this shark in motion.” (Williams 570)…
