Personal Narrative: A Look Into My Life

Decent Essays
Topic A: A look into my life Growing up for me was very difficult. My mother was a single parent that had four children. One in which, has cerebral palsy. My dad was never in my life, even though I know who he is, he was never there for us. So everything was up to my mom. For example, it was her job to buy us our food, our clothes, and make sure we were all going to school on time.We lived in a duplex that was run under the government. For a long time, my mom had to go to our local food bank because my mom did not have money for us to eat. She would work little jobs from one place to another, but she always made sure that we had food. Some days she would go days without eating because everything she had gotten was just for us. As a result, she was the most skinniest person that I knew. She has been through a lot. Especially, when my oldest brother was born. My brother was born with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disorder of the brain that causes non movement in bones, and muscles. My mom was always in and out of the hospital with him because there would be days when his heart would just stop. She would stay in the hospital with him for up to 2 years, since he was born. …show more content…
I lived in the projects from birth till I was fifthteen. Growing up there had pros and cons. The cons included drug dealers and prostitution. The pros was that seeing a lot of that everyday gave me a lesson to not be them. I want my life to be successful and I want to have a bright future. The people in that neighborhood taught me that their life is horrible. My neighborhood and my community have taught me that my life is worth more than doing drugs or giving myself to strangers for money. I believe that if I go to the University of Texas at Austin, I will be able to show others that have the same background as me, that you can make it, and as long as you follow the path to success you will be

It was a place where I found peace without judgment, and friendship without deception or lies. My friends, teachers, peers, coaches, and family gave me the confidence to pursue a higher education and push me to excel and succeed in whatever I aspire to become. Having gone through all of that, I have never despaired nor lost the strength to face challenges head-on. I drew my strength from the support of my family, friends, and teachers. I chose to go into the medical field so I could help others who are in need the way I was helped by my community.…

I align myself with the youth of Baltimore City. Since enrolling in a Baltimore City Public School, I feel more connected to the rest of the city and the issues that affect young people daily. There is often times negative, and discriminatory image of us, which I admittedly used to have myself. During my young life, I thought those in public school were uniformly impoverished, aggressive, and, for lack of a better term, “ghetto.” I was insecure about my voice, my packed lunch, even my own safety when I entered high school.…

The neighborhood I grew up in you see homeless people on the street asking for change, mothers shedding tears over the lost of their children, children wearing the same clothes due to their family income, and teenagers hanging in the streets late at night. My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

I have gone in depth in studying my neighborhood from the beginning of the Children in New York Class and I can definitely say that I have learn a lot about my neighborhood that I didn’t have no knowledge about. The fact that Brownsville is known as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn and I have been living here for so many years and wasn’t aware of that. My perspective sure did change, due to the fact that there is such a high percentage of 23.4% of people living under the poverty line which is almost the same as the while New York city at 24%. This is very sad to know that’s you are living in a neighborhood that is basically suffering yet the government or a politician does anything to fix these issues. No wonder these young…

I believed in the justice system and I believed in the police being fair and equal. I did not realized how privileged I am simply because of the color of my skin or economic status. Previous to being part of this city, I did not know human dignity was still being fought for and equality of education was not truly being given. However after being here, I realized that I did not know as much as I thought I did in terms of restoring dignity to people and communities through urban education.
