Thousands of books are published and placed on shelves, only to be looked over time and time again by readers of all ages. The struggle to convince people to buy one’s book is a mixture of a really good advertising company, if one can afford it, and a book that is actually worth reading. The Harry Potter series is again an excellent example of this. The books were placed in shops and schools and became extremely popular simply by word of mouth because of the quality of the literature in them. This is perhaps the greatest struggle of being a writer: many people love to write, but whether or not they are good at it is a completely different question. Deciding to try to pursue writing as a career is honestly a very terrifying option. There will most likely be years of rejections and refusals, terrible opinions, and months of writer’s block. I will need to find another job to do well at to support my family, but writing will always be my love. I hope to truly succeed in this field, and would love to work in publishing or editing to help others achieve their dreams of publishing a book. Writing is about more than words on a page; it is about words on a page that suddenly take on new meaning. Words have the power to change people’s minds and opinions, tell stories, expand imaginations, and expose feelings and emotions we hardly knew we had.
