Personal Narrative: A Career As A Social Worker

When choosing an occupation, it is common for individuals to chase after the job with more pay and less physical labor. However, the jobs with higher salary require more education, more logical thinking, and more self- driven. Unfortanatley, not everyone can afford to attend college and land in a high paying job. In today's society, occupations are based on prestige and judged on the order they rank. From viewing the occupational prestige table on page 227, a cab driver compared to a high school teacher earns less prestige in which I personally agree due to the fact that a cab driver requires less education and abstract thought than becoming certified in teaching. Now when it comes to a High school teacher earning more prestige than a police officer or a social worker earning less prestige than a classical musician, now that I disagree with the occupational prestige table. In this situation, when comparing a classical musician to a social worker I have to argue that social workers go through much more education than a classical musician. I feel that in order to become a classical musician you need to have the talent and dedication than to have a history of degrees and certifications. Becoming a social worker takes dealing with reuniting families, handling divorce, and adoptions. For a classical musician to recieve higher prestige than a social worker shows that playing an instrument is given way more respect than an individual who pursues a career in helping emotionally damaged individuals.
