Personal Narrative: A Career As A Pharmacist

I recently had the great opportunity to listen to a lecture by Dr. Richard Wenzel, a pharmacist who works at one of two inpatient headache clinics in the entire country. He talked about the importance of standing out from other pharmacy students, as the demand for pharmacists falls and the number graduating drastically rises . When I decided pharmacy school was the right fit for me, I did not consider the salary or the job placement as part of my choice. With the recent increase in the number of graduating pharmacists across the country, I need to be ready to prove that I am the better person for the job, something I have never felt much pressure to do before. Dr. Wenzel talked about how it is critical to get a job where there is a need for you, and to always learn from your mistakes. …show more content…
Wenzel spoke about his experience in implementing a pharmacy position in the headache clinic he currently works at. He talked about how the smallest things you do, like counseling a patient on a new medication, can fill a void and prove your need. It is important to show exactly how you can positively affect the healthcare team. This also speaks to how it is essential to demonstrate what makes you better for a job than someone else. If you can make a difference in the care of patients, you should be a valued asset to an employer. I can learn from this idea even in my current job. If, for example, I am able to educate patients about the importance of getting vaccinated and in turn provide more immunizations, I feel comfortable that I will be rewarded with the opportunity to continue my career with my current
