Personal Narrative: A Career As A Certified Nurse

Improved Essays
“I’ll see you guys bright and early tomorrow” I didn’t realize that bright and early meant I was going to have my hands on a patient for the first time, I didn’t realize that bright and early would be the beginning of the exciting future that awaits me. Tomorrow was going to be the first day I did the job of helping others as a Certified Nurse Aide. The day I got to see life from a different perspective. It’s always been my dream to go into healthcare and help others, but really I was just so anxious to be in scrubs already. I remember waking up that Saturday morning right before the sun came out with the biggest smile on my face. As I stepped off my bed I could hear some whispers from the kitchen “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Aileen wake up happy in the morning, especially at this time” said my dad just as any father would say about their teenager. I ignored and continued to get ready, I remember doing my hair first then my makeup. I usually always put my clothes on before doing anything else but today was different and that was when I realized that I was ready to be something different, I was ready to experience life in a different way. Also I didn’t want to get my scrubs dirty, no one likes to show up dirty especially when it’s your first day on the job. Watch, pen, name tag, and comfy shoes I was ready and finally on my way to Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center. At that moment it still hadn’t hit me that in less than 30 minutes I was going to be starting my first shift as a CNA. As I was driving into the parking lot, of course after 10 minutes of not knowing where I was, I felt one of the craziest feelings ever. It was as if butterflies were getting chased by a herd of cows in my stomach. It was that feeling you feel when life is finally falling into place but at the same time stressing to know what will be of your future, I was curious to know if after this day I decided I didn’t want to go into health care anymore. Ready or not I was going to let things come as they did. “Hi, my name is Carissa I’ll be your CNA mentor today.” Me? Standing on the other side of the nurses station, how? “Hi, my mom is getting a little upset, I think she’s ready to get up and go to breakfast.” Okay, that means we have to go get her out of bed, toilet her, change her, and get her presentable to go to breakfast just as if she was at home, was what I thought in my mind.”I know what to do!” I said out loud, Carissa then smiled at me “Come on, let's go get her up” I then realized that those butterflies I was feeling just 20 minutes ago were no longer there, could it be that I was already comfortable with what I was doing? Too soon to tell. Now let me tell you, spending two months of bookwork on the skills we were going to be doing is so much different than being hands on with the skills. Before I knew it I had the lady up and ready to go out the door “Wait, don’t forget your walker!” After that first resident I got ready I’ve never felt more happy for myself, did I really just do that all on my own? “You did quite well honey, good luck with the rest of your day” Those words I will never forget as I walked the lady to the dining room. Little does …show more content…
After everyone gave their talk about their day “Oh my goodness I got to do that too!” I think everyone knew how excited I was to be there, “How are you so good with the residents?” Well already working at a nursing home does really help. I do know what to expect from the elderly already, but working activities is definitely different than caring for them, because of course I didn’t ever touch them. You could definitely tell that my instructor was proud of the class that she taught “It’s a different feeling being the one behind the nurses stations

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

As a future register nurse and as a woman I feel that a have a tremendous responsibility to give back to my community. I believe that one of the most forgotten populations in our community is the elderly, and as a society we have so much to learn from them and to thank them for what they did in the past. I strongly believe that if I could make some positive changes I would decide to do them to influence some senior citizens’ lives and to change their isolation for companion and thankfulness. I would advocate for the elderly with our authorities and I would request a budget to build a clinic to provide preventive health care services for them. I would designate a budget to build a nursing home for the elderly that do not have a place to…
