Just as Geelong is about to score just their second goal of the night, Daniel Tahlia tackles his player and picks up the ball to pass to Riley Knight. Knights’ hand passes off to Rory Laird and he kicks it to the corridor where Hugh Greenwood is free to mark the ball. The game, once again, was up to me. If I score, we have a chance of pulling away with the win. Once again, I knew I had to be confident. I placed the ball down on the dot, took three long step back and inhaled a deep breath of air. I ran up to the ball once the whistle was blown and looked at the left of the goalie, causing the goalie to dive right.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Soccer isn't just sport. It’s a lifestyle. Without soccer, I don't know where I would be today. The freshly mowed green grass underneath my cleats, the earthy smell of the dirt filling my nose, the pure, clean air all around engulfs me in its embrace. The sun rising in the horizon, our parents cheering on the sidelines, the blow of a whistle.…

Time unfroze and all I saw were Bethlehem players surrounding the official and shouting out words of complaint. For what? It appeared to be that the ref called offside and the goal was withdrawn! We could not have been more relieved and overtime did loom. All the players were cramped up for overtime, so both halves of overtime were relatively quiet. Penalties would decide the champions.…

We all sat anxiously in the changing rooms, packed in tight like a tin of sardines. Still wet from doing the warm up in the pouring rain. Nobody talked, it was dead silent, so silent in fact that it was scary. I was nervous. As the coach talked about how we deserved to win this and all of the plays we should try to play; I sat there staring blankly at the floor, eager to get out on to the cold, wet pitch to tackle some people and to score a try or two like I had dreamed about last night.…

The final shot of extra time came barreling at me. It was just to the right of me. So I did what goalkeepers do best and picked it out of the air and brought the ball along with my body to the ground. As I was getting up off the ground I heard the ear piercing sound of the final whistle. Everyone on the field, along with myself, stomachs sank because they knew the game was headed for a PK shootout.…
