I have been interested in geological sciences since I was a child. Growing up on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, my mother was a member of a heritage and nature group called The Natural Trust Foundation and as a result she would take me along to the different programs and excursions. One moment in particular that stands out to me was a visit to the volcano in Soufriere, located in the southwest part of the island. Just to mention that St. Lucia has the world’s only “drive-in” volcano. Our tour guide was very well informed about the types of energy that can be sourced from this wonderful phenomenon. This struck me as the most fascinating aspect of all our previous tours. I remember thinking, “We can obtain energy from this and convert it to electricity?” As I grew up, my knowledge grew about the negative impact on the environment from the use of fossil fuels. These adverse effects have boosted the need to find alternative energy sources worldwide. This scramble to “save” the environment has led to many different ways to find clean energy with one being geothermal energy. There are attempts to harness the geothermal energy from the Soufriere volcano and the surrounding hot springs. Other volcanic islands in the Caribbean …show more content…
Lucia, I am multicultural because of the French, African, Indian, and European influences. This may explain my case of wanderlust. I have always been a self motivated individual who seeks out any chance to improve myself. And so, while at York College I found the opportunity to study abroad satisfied my wanderlust briefly on a study abroad trip during my sophomore year in Crete, Greece. During my time in Crete I was exposed the earliest civilization recorded, their culture, geology, and history. This experience not only allowed me to experience a foreign country and avoid the dangers of ethnocentrism—making me a more enlightened individual, but seeing the rich geology of the island cemented my

(How Geothermal Energy Works) After we find and drill holes into the earth to get the water vapor, we transfer it into electricity. We do this using a steam turbine generator. The turbine is operated by heating the water found from hot spots creating steam. The steam is guided through a pipe which is used to rotate the blades of a turbine. This is very similar to the windmill; the heat energy from the steam is then turned to mechanical energy.…

Current event article number one; Incredible facts about liquid Igneous rock Cullen Croghan Ivy Tech Community College Gemma Tarlach author of the article “Twenty Things You Didn’t Know About Lava” that I found from the magazine Discover did a very nice job talking about lava and the variations of it. Although she’s not a full-blown geologist she did a nice job with information very close to that of what’s been inscribed into our text books and what’s been told to us in class. After reading the article I did some research on Gemma Tarlach to see what made her qualified to be able to write a paper about the lava and its different types, while still having credible facts to back up the article. I couldn’t find much on her except that she works…

The commonly used source of energy in the world, fuel, is not renewable. Once the fuel wells are exhausted, they cannot be retrieved. However, you cannot deplete geothermal energy, because there is a continuous formation of heat under the earth’s surface. If the experts tap this energy efficiently, they can be able to generate enough energy every day, which will help in the economic growth of different countries.…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
