This day was important because they were celebrating Shabbat I was able to go in the evening. I wore a skirt and a nice shirt because my friend said it was fine. When I arrived I was greeted by everyone there, they were very kind. The service started with a song called

On September 9th I attended a Phi Slam event called Kaleidoscopic Color-Dressed Chromatic Dance Fest. This was a social dance event that is completely dry and it is essentially a giant dance party. The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

The Pious Ones by Harvey Arden describes the way of life for Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg. In this article, it was described that the Rebbe lead them into their culture after a hard time in concentration camps when they lost all hope of their religion. Within the time preceding and during the holocaust there were instances of Jewish resistance, though they seemed few and far between. The instances of resistance were primarily behind the scenes and subliminal, mainly consisting of passive resistance to segregation. In addition to this there was outright resistance though very limited primarily during deportations and city cleansing. The final form of resistance that was practiced was the act of resisting death through hiding and escape. These three ideas were gathered from the two readings, Ordinary Men by Christopher R. Browning and Between Dignity and Despair: Jewish Life in Nazi Germany by Marion A. Kaplan.…

Last Sunday, I attend my friend’s Francine church service generally speaking going to church is something that has been installed in me, throughout my upbringing being that, I am a Baptist Christian, but I decided to take a cultural plunge and experience another domination of Christianity. Francine’s Church is called The Evening of the Light and is considered a Protestant church. Prior to attending the service, I was shocked when Francine instructed me to wear a long skirt or dress that went pass my knees and not to wear any make- up. This was so odd to me because at my church there were no dress codes and the members typically wore formal attire on the first Sunday of the month because we took communion and there definitely wasn’t any restriction…

The meaning of Messianic Judaism is explained by Rabbi David Chernoff as “a movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua (Jesus Hebrew) is the promised savior (Chernoff 1).” The messianic movement welcomes the gentile or Christians and Jews alike to join together for worship. The rituals of the Messianic Congregation are the same as Judaism, including the observing of the traditions and holidays of the Jewish people with one main difference in belief. The difference being, in Rabbinic Judaism Jesus is not considered to be the “anointed one” and Rabbis are to be still looking for the Messiah. The Messianic movement has been around for over two thousand years.…

Growing up in a Mexican American household, most likely one is to be raised Catholic. Therefore, as a young boy it became ordinary to follow and believe in what my parents instilled in me. Furthermore, I never had the courage to explore any other religion and get a sense of what other religions are about. However, now that I am taking Social Work 461 with Dr. Tillman, one of my assignments is to attend a religious service that is held by a group that is different from mine. As a result, I decided to attend a Buddhist temple to get an insight of what the Buddhist religion is about.…
