Personal Example Of Classical Conditioning

Improved Essays
My personal example of classical conditioning took place on a warm sunny summer day floating in a very relaxing pool. My boyfriend and I were floating around enjoying our summer break drinking Tequila out of oversized Yeti cups; mine was pink. It was all bubbles and butterflies at first, but when I got out of the pool and began to walk I soon discovered my cerebellum had been impaired. Minutes later I puked and passed out. The tequila was an unconditioned stimulus (UCS). After this incident took place every time I hear, think, or smell tequila I kid you not I gag and cring, so that was the unconditioned response (UCR). My pink Yeti cup is the neutral stimulus (NS). When I see any form of pink cups or yeti cups I think of this occurrence. Now that pink cups remind me of tequila it's now a conditioned stimulus (CS). I know have learned to never drink that much tequila again which is a conditioned response (CR). For future references, don't drink anomalous amounts of tequila.

When I first got employed I was very alert to the new environment I was in. I observed the other and employees and how they did everything. This one employee was not very concerned on what time she arrived, or maybe it was just an accident, either way upon her arrival my manager saw her clock in time and was not very happy. He fired her on spot because of this. Ever since then I took into account what happened and learned to never do that because I knew what would happen to me if I did. I remembered distinctly because it frightened me. I examined my coworkers that arrived on time and their good work ethics and imitated that. I did this because I had the desire to make money. The amount of money I brought home every night to take care of my fur child (Nala my cat) motivated me to be to work on time. Now I am well versed in all forms of conditioning, as long as i'm not drinking

As students taking psychology at Hood College, we started to learn about the branches of conditioning. After learning about this we were then asked to observe 3 different commercials that were very peculiar because they seemed normal to the naked eye. But after analyzing it more closely we saw a few different types of conditions being present. The types of condition that were perceived were classical conditioning, operant conditioning and observational learning. To start off, classical conditioning is “A type of learning in which a neutral stimulus acquires the ability to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another stimulus.”…

Classical Conditioning plays an important role in the way humans behave. Psychologist utilize stimulus and response in order to evoke a particular behavior in humans. For example, in the episode “Ducky Tie” in the popular television show, How I Met Your Mother, Barney uses classical conditioning overtime to eventually trick Marshall. At first, Barney appeals to a simple sound stimulus to generate a desire for Marshall to want to go to a particular restaurant. Therefore, whenever Marshall says the restaurant name “Shinjitsu,” Barney sneezes.…

In the video clip for The Office, the neutral stimulus that became the conditioned stimulus was the bell/alarm on the computer. An example of classical conditioning that I had experienced would be with my horses. When I first got my horses, I would whistle to them when I was bringing feed. At first they did not notice my whistle until they saw the bucket of feed, now though, every time I whistle their heads pop up. Now every time I whistle, my horses come looking for my bucket of feed, even when I do not have food, like when I go on a run down…

The main features of the classical conditioning is the way it is learned and this is through associations. An object would become the stimulus and how it is responded too becomes known as the unconditioned response as we aren’t taught or conditioned, for example in the dog experiment the bell is the stimulus and the food and water are the unconditioned responses as the dog didn’t need to be taught or conditioned to salivate at the sight of these. The main features of the condition are stimulus generalisation and discrimination, extinction and recovery. Generalisation is a type of condition where it promotes a similar response after the response has been learned. Secondly, discrimination is to break of the conditioned response with an other response it has not already been doubled with.…

One has two methods of reaction, unconditioned and conditioned reflexes. Unconditioned reflexes appear when one is born, there is no teaching required. Some examples include jumping at a loud noise, sweating when it’s hot outside, things that are automatic to humans. The unconditioned stimulus is the thing causing these reactions. In these situations, the unconditioned stimulus would be the loud noise and the heat.…

It’s important to understand how classical conditioning is done because people may be conditioning themselves to various things – food allergies, fears. And conditioning is also found in everyday life – advertising. We pair two things frequently without realizing it. We may pair Coca-Cola with happiness. During Christmas, we see Santa Claus figures and may feel happy (unconditioned stimulus and unconditioned response).…

Exercise 1.1 Health Models a) Define what is meant by (i) the biomedical and (ii) the biopsychosocial model. The term biomedical model refers to a particular viewpoint (model) that proposes disease and illness to be the body’s response to solely biological factors. For example that disease is caused by injury or chemical imbalances, thus it excludes social and psychological reasons for disease. (Sarafino & Smith, 2014).…

According to this learning theory, every aspect of human psychology is as a result of stimulus and response (Medin, Ross, and Markman 50). The theory stipulates that unconditioned stimulus (UCS) brings about unconditioned response (UCR) in any living organism. This is to mean that a stimulus placed in an environment produces a response or behavior that is unlearned and hence becomes a natural response that has not been taught. Children watching the film, Cinderella, are likely to acquire the perspective that women are weak and need to be rescued by men through classical conditioning mode of learning.…

To further explain classical conditioning in a lighter tone, in a “Lumen Learning” article informing, “..conditioning has been used as a successful form of treatment..in substance abuse and smoking.” (Lumen Learning). These treatments include having a uncomfortable or undesirable stimulus which results in having a different perspective on the past substance abuse. This may sound like it’s practical but this is another form controlling a person's thought process, relating to psychology is potentially dangerous. In a “ConnectUs” article it explains how conditioning is not useful even if it’s for good.…

For classical conditioning there is one suitable example would be a super bowl commercial in the year 1992. The summary of the commercial is that two boys are watching a gorgeous long-haired blonde women walking to a Pepsi soda machine on a hot summer 's day to sexually drinking the can of Pepsi. The spying boys help end the commercial to say “Is that a great new Pepsi can, or what?” while completely not paying any attention to the beautiful woman. The reason why this is a fitting example of classical conditioning is because it involves all the stimuli mentioned.…

Classical conditioning is to the development of an association between a (CS) and a (US) and is an example of non-declarative memory, such as remembering how to do something or what happens as a result of doing performing that task, to prevent you from doing it again later. In Memento, Sammy Jankis is seen in a black and white scene with a triangle that shocked him every time he picked it up, although he should’ve been able to be conditioned to avoid the shock, he continued to pick it up. (Figure…

Operant conditioning can be used in behaviour modification, stopping addiction, language acquisition and in many other areas through reinforcement or punishment. Punishment is used to stop bad behaviours while reinforcement stops the bad behaviour and teaches what to do instead. A good example of the application of operant conditioning is a speeding driver. If he gets a ticket on that particular day, chances are, he will not over speed in future. The ticket is the punisher that puts the behaviour of over speeding to an end.…

S., (1989), operant conditioning is “learning in which a voluntary response is strengthened or weakened, depending on its favorable or unfavorable consequences.” In the late 19th century psychologists Edward Thorndike came up with the Law of Effect; it wasn’t until later in the early 1900’s a psychologist named B.F. Skinner who extended the idea of operant conditioning. Within this research Skinner used several principles while studying operant conditioning: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment to name a few. Positive and negative reinforcement are neither good nor bad. For instance, positive reinforcement would be something like running a race and receiving a medal for the place you finished.…

Classical conditioning is a process in which behaviour is modified. It was made famous by Ivan Pavlov and the experiments he carried out by using his dogs. Classical conditioning occurs when an unconditioned stimulus is paired with a conditioned stimulus. When both stimuli have been repeatedly paired, the organism which in Pavlov’s case was his dog shows a conditioned response to the conditioned stimulus.…
