The Influence of Grandpa There have been a few life events that have taken place that that will drive me to reach my academic goals at Colorado Christian University; one in particular; a visit involving my Grandpa. As a child his influence played a major role in my life, and even from beyond the grave he has influenced me to strive to fulfill what I was meant to do in life. First of all there are a few things about me you need to know. Upon graduating High School in 2004, I applied and was accepted to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Initially, I wanted to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, because of my desire to help people in need. Then I had a change of heart and because of my interest in Science, I started taking …show more content…
Inside the folder were a graduation ceremony program, and a Bachelor of Science Degree. Then my Grandmother told me a story about Grandpa and his education. When he was 16 he enlisted in the Army, fought in both the Korean and Vietnam War. By the time Grandpa was 37, he had spent over 20 years in the Army and had not completed his education. So, he decided to go back to school. In the Graduation ceremony program was his name (Melvin Holifield) along with my Father and my Uncle. Even though he was 40 years old he went back to school to achieve his goals and ultimately graduate with his sons. To me this was beyond inspiring from the most influential person that has ever been in my life. Now, here I am almost 30 years and have decided that I'm not going to settle for a degree I don’t want. Nor am I going to give in and be just another young mother who never finished her education. Grandpa has shown me that it’s never too late to achieve the goals you have in life. To me, his inspiration will allow me to achieve my educational goals at Colorado Christian University, and ultimately become the nurse that I’ve always wanted to

Back when I was in 6th grade, I had a problematic issue with the illiteracy of learning science all around us. It was the subject where many scholars had to use scientific tools in order to solve equations and prove that their hypotheses is true or not. Specifically, It was not my thing. Having suffered through multiple cancerous tragedies and having a loved one take their own life, my great grandma still smiles through it all. Bernice Downs, an eighty-seven year old woman, is the most influential women in my life because of her amazing ability to stay strong and positive. She, like Fredrick Douglass, has the capability to influence others while continuing to be resilient even in the toughest times. As well as this rare quality, my great grandma and Fredrick Douglass both share the qualities of being gregarious and influential, extraordinary traits that average people do not portray. My grandmother's biological father, my great grandfather, was born in the United States. His parents, Elida and Kristian Jorstad, were immigrants from Norway to America. This was not uncommon, being that from 1825 to 1925, more than 750,000 Norwegians settled into homes in Canada and the United States (lonelyplanet.com). They established a home in Iowa. Because of that, the transition was a major one.…

As a person who is going to be a first generation college student, my journey towards obtaining a higher education has been challenging to say the least. Neither my father or mother finished high school, but when I was very young, my mother, who struggled with alcoholism, left my father and I, and he has raised me by himself ever since. Over the course of my childhood, my father did everything in his power to make ends meet through working long hours and multiple jobs so that I could have the opportunities that he never had. Because of this, at an early age I learned to do without certain things and when I was old enough, I got a job of my own to help provide for myself and my father. As a result of these things, sometimes it was difficult to do well in school and other activities, but I always found a way to succeed through diligence and time management skills.…

My own experience as a five-year-old second-degree burn victim in the Glenwood Springs, Colorado small community hospital’s emergency room never evaporates from my adult decision-making. “You will hurt” was the message my seven-year-old sister relayed to me in our native Spanish language as the staff arduously worked to clean and debride my thigh. No translators were available, and my family circled in shared fear as well as linguistic isolation. Immigrant families who live in camper shells are certainly more at risk for childhood injuries, yet observing the compassionate and diligent efforts of trained medical professionals reacting to my accident sparked my current goal of becoming a Physician Assistant despite the financial and cultural…

Ever since I was a kid, I knew one thing: I wanted to be successful, I wanted to be someone important. Some days, this vision was the only escape I had from a severely broken home. I spent my early years taking care of my baby brother, something my mother couldn’t do, due to her severe bipolar- schizophrenic mental problems. My dad was to sick to do much of anything; at only seven years old I was taking care of a kid and going to school. I had to mature pretty quickly in order for my family to survive.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

If I could acknowledge one person as the most motivating, inspirational force for me to complete college, it would be my father. Ever since I was a young, I can remember him giving me positive encouragement to pursue a college education. A year ago, my father passed away after a long fight against pancreatic cancer.
