Personal Essay: Spearfishing In Florida

During the summer of 2015, my older brother Colin, took me on an incredible trip spearfishing off the coast of Florida. I’ve never been a fan of just throwing a line in the water and waiting; it has always been too passive of an activity for me to completely enjoy. Finally, I would be able to get into the water and bring the fight to the fish. The first thing we needed to get was a fishing license from the State of Florida’s department of Fish and Game. We were able to easily download two of the Saltwater/Freshwater Fishing Combo licenses on our phones for a mere thirty-two dollars each. The whole thing only took about five minutes and was worth avoiding the hundred and thirty eight dollar fine.
We arrived in Southern Florida early Saturday morning. Our first stop was to acquire a vital weapon for our war on the fish, a proper spear gun. We opted with JBL’s 38 Special Northwest. It was described to the two of us as the speargun that started it all, the employee at the local rental store told us, “The JBL Magnum series of guns is probably responsible for more speared fish than all other spearguns combined.” It was a no-brainer really. This particular reef was home to an abundant of different saltwater fish species-- and the occasional reef shark. The company we rented the boat from was gracious enough to include stringers that you roped the speared fish around and weight belts to counteract the buoyancy of the wetsuits. We put on our snorkel gear and fell backwards into the water, chilly darkness surrounded me.
