Established in 1932, Richards Tree Farm has been passed down for generations. From landscaping to home and garden, it carries a little bit of everything. I landed this job two years ago when I was a seventeen-year-old short on money. Being located on Route 209 across from Weery's Pub, my drive to work every morning is very short. Having already been good friends with the owners, simply asking them for a position was the only criteria in obtaining this job. When I first started working at Richards Tree Farm, I didn't know anything about plants, but it didn't take long for me to learn. One of the first things I was asked on my first day was if I knew the difference between an annual and a perennial; I had no idea what an annual and perennial even was. After countless hours of watching and listening in on sales from other workers and reading the tags of every plant I encountered, I finally started to absorb some of the knowledge. Perennials and annuals happen to be very different; it’s one of the biggest dividing factors between plants. Annuals need to be replanted every year. Whereas perennials come back each season on their own. There are plants that prefer shade, plants that prefer sun, and even plants that don't have a preference at all. North East Pennsylvania happens to fall in zone five on the hardiness scale. We only carry plants that fall in our hardiness zone because they wouldn't survive otherwise.
