I’m a first generation Cambodian who is the first to graduate high school and the first in my family to graduate from community college. My transfer to a new college will be another accomplishment and first in my life.
With these intentions, I aim to get my bachelor’s degree. I seek the journey of going through the classes to earn it. It will be something I can look back on and be proud that I will have been the first in my family to have achieve a bachelor’s degree.
When I go to school to become a teacher, it’s not about money or a job title. I did a work study at YCCC as an English tutor for the America Reads program. When I walk into schools and work with children on their reading and writing, it makes me happy to see students proud of themselves. When I achieve my goals to become an ESL/ ELL teacher in the future working with older students at a high school, I want to earn trust from students, help them grow and learn about themselves, and give them a good, quality education for their sake.
I also want to meet new people; Maine lacks diversity. As a Cambodian-American, there are very few people I can relate to at school since the majority of the state’s population is white. I would like to meet people from different backgrounds to find common ground …show more content…
I want to create an environment that is comfortable for students to work in without feeling too much pressure. I want to teach students in a way that helps them understand what they are learning. I feel joy when students are proud of themselves because they have accomplished their goals. When I see students happy with their work, with or without the help of a teacher, it’s satisfying.
