Stress is a circumstance that is an existing dynamic in a person’s life. Each individual views stress in a unique manner. According to Lamberton and Minor (2014), stress is defined as the generic response of the body to any pressure made on it. Stress is interwoven in all aspects of life and can be expressed both physically and emotionally. A physiologist who delved into the study of stress and its effects articulated that there are two kinds of stress: eustress and distress (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). In people’s lives, there is an endurance of external and internal stressors.
In my personal life, I feel like I am experiencing greater than normal levels of stress. In my professional career, I am working in a stressful environment with strong personalities. Working in an intensive care unit with critical patients is demanding, let alone the drama surrounding the patients and the staff members as well. This is an example of an external stressor. First, I can set my schedule to be more manageable with my lifestyle. I could reduce my course load for academia to decrease the amount of homework as a student. In addition, I could eliminate available acting gigs that arise on occasion as an actor. Furthermore, I could delegate my responsibilities as a classroom parent to other parents. Next, I can perform a cognitive appraisal for my situation. According to Lamberton and Minor (2014), a cognitive appraisal is the thinking assessment of an event or circumstance that varies depending on the individual and the day. Setting enough time in my day to complete daily tasks and errands can regulate a sense of tranquility and composure, should a stressor occur. Furthermore, I can utilize the rational-emotive therapy to enhance my own belief system and swap unreasonable beliefs with more sensible ones (Lamberton & Minor,
