When Odysseus first discovers about the suitors and what they were doing to his wife he felt disturbed, “ I would rather die by sword in my own house than witness the perpetual repetition of these outrages….just for the sport of the thing, with no excuse, no rational end in sight.” (106) Odysseus felt disgusted at how selfish and shameless the suitors were. He did not feel as though he was capable of confronting them. The suitors bothered Odysseus to such an extent that he was willing to kill himself instead of coming face to face with them. Katabasis is developed by the author during this part of the epic poem, because of how badly Odysseus did not want to meet let alone speak with the suitors and to what limits he would go to to stop himself from meeting them. That being said, he still accomplished his journey and confronted the suitors. Moreover, Homer integrates strife caused by the suitors as Odysseus is about to fight them. Athena addresses Odysseus when he began to show cowardice and fear during the final leg of his journey, “ ‘I can’t believe, Odysseus, that you of all people, have lost the guts that you had when you fought back the Trojans for nine long years to get Helen back, killing so many in combat and coming up with a plan that took wide Troy.
