His bravery allows him to survive the battle. “Colter threw himself prone, leveled his rifle, and picked off another painted enemy. His third shot killed the Blackfoot chiefs horse.”(45) Because of his bravery and confidence, Colter is able to defend himself and survive a dangerous situation. When Lisa orders Colter to make the journey yet again, Colter is captured by the Blackfeet. They converse among themselves about the method in which they should kill him, and settle on the “Injun Run”. Colter is confident that he can outrun the warriors. “The trapper was a swift runner. He knew that he had a chance to make “the Injun Run.” (47) Although he is not confident that he will survive, he knows that running for his life is a far better option than being killed on the spot. Without his intelligence, he would have not been able to formulate a plan for escape. His bravery and confidence are also of great help to him on his journey. Had he been a coward, he would not have been able to think clearly, or carry out the daring actions that aid him in his escape from the Blackfeet. Finally, Colter’s physical strength give him the power that he needs in order to travel great distances. He is able to survive because of his endurance and advanced fitness
