In Persepolis, Marjane shows very clearly that the women in her life had a big impact on the way she develops throughout the novel and these women also helped her become the woman she is today. Marji’s mother, grandmother, schoolteachers and the maid helped her develop into an independent and strong woman. Iran split up into two major groups: the fundamentalist and the modern. Fundamentalist women covered up their whole body and hair except their face. Modern women showed some hair to show they were against the regime. But these women had to deal with people who told them they should wear the veil. For example one time a men told Marji’s mother: “Women like you should be pushed up against the wall and fucked, and then thrown in the garbage. And if you don’t want that to happen, you should wear the veil” (Satrapi, page 74). The women that showed hair were often referred to as sluts. Fundamentalist people said thing like: “Soon, it won't just be food. With all those sluts out there, we're going to have to watch our husbands." After some time the new leader required woman to wear the veil. The new leader thought that “Women’s hair emanates rays that excite men” (Satrapi, page 74). Marji and her mother didn’t want to wear a veil and protested together with other women. They thought that women could dress and act however they want and I totally agree to that
