When you were young, you had no idea about what kind of person you would become. You had no idea what turns your life would take, or where you would end up in the end. As you begin to age, you slowly create a blueprint of your life and your personality, and the longer you live, the more detailed this blueprint becomes. In Persepolis, the main character, Marji, is just starting to create this blueprint, and her blueprint starts out very vague. However, as she grows, she begins to develop the map of her life, and she slowly discovers who she wants to be. During her self-discovery, Marji is influenced by several things that play a major role in her life: family, religion, and conflict. These things help Marji define herself and show how easily influenced a young person is by their circumstances. As Marji was growing up, she was closest to her family. She had a very good relationship with her parents, and they shared everything with each other. During her early childhood, it’s safe to say that Marji was fairly religious. She dreamed of being the last prophet, and she talked to God every night. As she got older, her perception of religion changed. A combination of her uncle’s death, the strict Islamic regime, and her parent’s political views caused Marji to turn her back on religion. These thoughts defined her stance on religion, and in her teenage years, her association with religion became slim to

Later, Marji meets Uncle Anoosh with whom she builds a special bond because he stood up for what he believed in even if it was opposed by the regime. When Anoosh is executed by the regime, Marji suddenly loses her faith in God (Figure 2). Satrapi emphasizes Marji’s loss in faith and doubt in God’s abilities because it allowed Marji to transform from a naive girl into a mature and rebellious woman. For example, after Marji’s mother yells at her for cutting class, Marji was overwhelmed with her strict parents and how the repressive regime was becoming, so she smoked a cigarette to symbolize her transition into adulthood (Figure 3). Marji was such…

We all have a friend that sometimes lacks the knowledge of the right time to stop, and therefore does not always realize the consequences of their actions. We love them, but their personality can bring us into situations we very much dislike. These friendships can be considered toxic for those who do not know how to deal with them, like Romeo. Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio, was definitely one of these people. Mercutio did not intend to hurt Romeo with his actions and character traits, but they led to Romeo meeting Juliet and to Romeo killing Tybalt, and hence being banished.…

Everyone knows that honesty is always the best policy and in my short graphic memoir, I share the story of the time I lied to a very important person in my life, just to protect myself from harm. My actions resulted from the fact that I was too scared to be honest and admit the truth. In my coming of age graphic memoir, I share a very important scene from my life, which has shaped me to become the person I am today. Like me, Marjane Satrapi also wrote a graphic memoir named Persepolis, describing her point of view and experience during the Islamic revolution.…
