At present there are three types of perioperative surgical home models; The Michigan surgical quality collaborative program, the UAB model, the UC Irvine model. This paper further presents the model developed by the University of Alabama. [3] The perioperative surgical home is patient centered evidence based standardized care which incorporates into all three phases of surgery which includes perioperative phase, intra operative phase and post operative phase. This paper further presents perioperative surgical model role in each phase of surgery.
Perioperative phase:
It is the first phase of surgery, which lasts from the time a patient decided to have surgery to the time when patient is transferred to the operating …show more content…
The major goal of the PSH model in this phase is reduce delays and cancellations of the surgery and it is done by following few guidelines which includes, using electronic medical records and transferring patient data which is assessed in PACT clinic to intra operative specialists, performing all required diagnostic procedures, informing patients or their attendants regarding unique circumstances, taking consensus from the anesthesiologist regarding criteria of attending scheduled cases and using electronic dashboards in scheduling surgeries which helps anesthesiologist to assess their daily schedule and it also requires patient to arrive to operating room one hour before the surgery. This dashboard also helps the physicians to evaluate the prognosis of the patients and indeed it helps to meet quality and safety …show more content…
Benefits for patients:
- The perioperative surgical home model helps the patient to get a single point of contact for all their problems and questions related to their health and they can get all their conditions treated at one place.
- This model also helps them to stay less in the hospital as it is a standardized evidence based care model.
- This model also helps the patient to avoid unnecessary testing’s and also avoid pre and post operative complications and reduces the costs to patients.
- As this model is patient centered which engages patients and their family members, it helps them to analyze what to expect and prepare.[7]
Benefits for healthcare administrators:
- This model helps to improve the quality and reduce the staffing costs per case
- This model also helps to improve the hospital metrics which includes length of stay, readmissions, patient satisfaction and
