Here are some differential diagnoses for perineal itching and ways to determining the diagnosis. For example, Litmus testing for pH, wet mount from a pap smear, K hydroxide (KOH) preparation and whiff test, cultures for fungi and trichomonads can be used to determine if the diagnosis is Vaginitis, candida albicans (monilia); Vaginitis, Gardnerella/bacterial (mix); Vulvovaginitis, Fungal (Diagnosis of, n.d.). According to Neistein (2008), laboratory tests, clinical findings, signs, and symptoms can assist the APN to determine if the diagnosis is pinworms, condylomata, acuminata/warts, genital Herpes, herpes genitalis, and/or herpes simplex, genital. Another diagnosis for perineal itching can be caused by an allergic reaction from soaps or unnecessary topical preparations such as feminine hygiene sprays or antibacterial soaps that change the pH of the vagina (Vaginal Itching, n.d.). According to Leone (2015), pediculosis pubis and scabies differential diagnoses can have a presentation of pruritus with skin lesions and identification of a characteristic burrow and/or by the identification of live lice and/or viable …show more content…
