The realization of what is reality and what isn’t can easily become blurred in literature specifically in the story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, in which a gentleman named Peyton Farquhar is to be hung for a crime against the Confederacy of which he was tricked into committing. The audience is led to believe he escaped the hanging until the final paragraph where that image is smashed to pieces, it is explained to be a figment of his imagination. Ambrose Bierce manipulates the reader into believing the unbelievable through word choice with an appeal to pathos and the shifting point of view throughout his story. The control over the audience demonstrated by Bierce is an extremely difficult skills to employ and he does…

The pity here is aimed towards the young girl who had to watch what took place. Moreover, the last two sentences read, “You don’t see the blood, which is probably trickling behind his ear and down the back of his neck. The way his head is twisted away from the door, the twist of the head gives you only a partial profile and it’s the wrong side, it’s not the side where he was hit” reinforces the fact that the author, husband, and the reader are all craving more detail and gore. Building upon that,…

Columnist Gregory Rodriguez has written about things such as immigration, political issues, as well as rumors. In “Truth is in the Ear of the Beholder” he discusses why people believe rumors for many reasons from trying to make themselves feel better, wanting it to be true and making sense of the world around them. Rumors can happen to anyone, including the President of the United States, usually very controversial, but that doesn’t prevent rumors from being told or believed. While he brings legitimate points to his argument to persuade readers there are also some fault in them as well. Rumors are processed differently as people hear them because of their own desires.…

In arguing against the theory of animalism, which claims that personal ontology is grounded in only the physical body, one avenue of objection is to provide counterexamples which show how there might be a body but no person, or multiple persons coexisting within one body. In his book, Persons, Animals, Ourselves, Paul Snowdon targets the animalism counterexample of multiple personality disorder. Though multiple personality disorder is a confusing mental condition of psychology which is highly debated, the potential for a multiple personality case is still applicable as an objection to animalism (144-145). Thus, Snowdon sets out an entire chapter of his book to attempt to dissuade readers that the intuition foundational to multiple personality…

Discuss the interplay between how individuals perceive themselves and how they are perceived by others. In his film Gattaca Andrew Niccol explored this dichotomy of people’s thoughts of us and our thoughts on ourselves. We would like to pretend we do not care how others perceive us; however, we have all secretly yearned to fit in somewhere, be it at work, school or at social gatherings. The way in which we see ourselves is heavily influenced by other people’s perceptions of us.…
