Of the organic compounds listed- pentan-1-ol, pentan-2-ol, 2-methylpentan-2-ol, and 1-chloropropane- are slightly soluble in water. Alcohols are compounds which contain an OH group; therefore the solubility of the alcohol compounds is dependent on the strength of the intermolecular forces between water and the hydroxyl group (OH) of the alcohol compound. The molecules of water are attracted, by means of the intermolecular forces, to the OH group on pentan-1-ol, pentan-2-ol, and 2-methylpentan-2-ol, thus making the compounds slightly soluble. These forces make hydrogen bonds with the OH groups of the water as well as oxygen bonds with the OH bonds of the respective compound, thus enabling the dissolving process.
