Penicillin G Chloramphenicol

The different antibiotics used in this experiment was Penicillin G, Chloramphenicol, Erythromycin and Tetracycline. Each functions in its own unique way that allows it to be affective in the treatment of different microorganisms. Penicillin is the most common, it works by destroying the cell wall of the microorganism that it is targeting. This happens by it deactivating the enzymes necessary for the cell to create cross linkages in the cell wall. The cell allows the penicillin as a substrate. Once inside, it then alkanolates the oxygen of the enzyme and turns it off. This then stops cell wall production and the cell dies soon after. Chloramphenicol is a lesser known antibiotic. It works by binding to the large subunit of the bacterial

However, my predictions on the order of highest to lowest zone of inhibition for the three antibiotics were proven wrong. Instead of the order neomycin, erythromycin, and tetracycline, results from figure 3 shows erythromycin, tetracycline, and then neomycin in the order of highest zone of inhibition to lowest. These predictions that was base on previous experiments from (Mcbride et al 2007) and (Wendelbo et al., 2003) were falsified. There is however limitation to my experiment because of the small sample size that consisted only of five agar trays. If more trials were done, we may get results closer to the sources.…

The study of microbiology requires not only understanding the microscopic organisms, but also the understanding of lab techniques and procedures used to identify, control, and manipulate microorganisms. The identification of microorganisms is not only important in microbiology lab, but also in the medical field to identify an agent of a disease that will help treat the patient by using the correct antibiotics to kill off the host. In this unknown lab report, techniques and procedures learned in the microbiology laboratory during the semester that was performed to test ones practical understanding of microbiology. The sole purpose of the unknown lab is to demonstrate understanding of the experimental methods and lab techniques learned during…

The class of drugs used in these treatments are mostly third generation cephalosporins (PHAC,2011). Cephalosporins of this generation are used because it is more effective against the gram-negative Neisseria gonorrheae than its predecessors. These drugs include cephalexin (Keflex), ceftriaxone (Rocephin), ceftizoxime, cefoxitin, and cefotaxime. These antibiotics cause cellwall damage and lysis in gram-negative bacteria (Talaro,). Macrolides such as azithromycin and Tetracyclines such as doxycycline are sometimes used in conjuction with cephalosporins.…

After the incubation period, the agar containing the antibiotic testing was taken out and if the microbe reacted with the antibiotic, a circle or clearing would appear around the disk containing the antibiotic. The diameter of this circle was then measured and compared with a table found on page 95 of the Microbiology Lab Manual to understand the antibiotics resistance, intermediate and sensitive levels, as they differ for each antibiotic. The numbers on the table in the Microbiology Lab Manual represented whether the microbe was resistant, shown in the light blue color on the graph, intermediate, shown in purple, or sensitive to the antibiotic, shown in the periwinkle color. As shown in figure 1 above, indicated with a yellow line, each antibiotic tested on unknown microbe #7 turned out to be sensitive. The diameters of the cleared out areas were vancomycin: 21mm, erythromycin:…

For more than 70 years, antibiotics have been used to treat bacterial infections of the body. The first appearance of this life changing medicine, was in the 1940’s on the battlefield. This medicine was named penicillin, the drug saved many from the brink of death, by fighting bacterial diseases; from then on antibiotics changed the face of medicine. Infection was no longer an impregnable wall that had to be broken down before the real treatment could begin, infections could be treated on site, at moments notice. As time passed, the world became co-dependent on the use of antibiotics to treat all of the body 's infections, and was repeatedly misused.…
