Penicillin Accidental Discovery

Decent Essays
Many, many, organisms die every year, as we all know, and without fungi, nothing would be able to decompose. You see, fungi break down dead plant and animal matter, completely eliminating any trace of the dead animal or plant. There are also some types of fungi that make medicine. For example, through an accidental discovery, the drug penicillin was created. Alexander Fleming was studying bacteria in 1928 when his experiment was contaminated with spores of Penicillium fungus destroyed all of the bacteria in his experiment. Through multiple years of research, the drug penicillin was created. Fungi also benefit plants, as roots of plants and hyphae of fungi weave together to create a structure called mycorrhiza. Since fungi cannot photosynthesize,

Sulfanilamide was discovered by an German biochemist. In 1932 he tested red die with a slightly changed chemical makeup and he found that is was effective. He then tried it on his daughter who was dying from a streptococcal infection and noticed she had major improvements and made a full recovery. However penicillin was discovered in a much more different way. Bacteriologist Alexander Fleming discovered germ-killing properties in a secret “mold juice” secreted by penicillium.…

There are three different mutations that have antibiotic resistant genes. Bacterial Conjugation is the direct transfer of DNA from one bacterial cell to another. The transferred DNA is a plasmid, a circle of DNA that is distinct from the main bacterial chromosome. One strand of the plasmid is transferred and the other stays in the original cell. Bacterial Transformation has the transfer of “naked” DNA into a recipient cell.…

As the American populous swayed with the beat of the Big Band era, so did pharmacology sway into action with the upbeat tone of the dawning antibiotic era. Antibiotics are medicine, such as penicillin or its derivatives, that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms. The discovery and development of new antibiotics in the 40’s changed the way people lived by advancing the way infections and diseases were treated, the way live stock was grown, and the improvement of the quality of life in the United States. Sir Alexander Fleming, was a biologist, pharmacologist and botanist, he is known for the discovery of the antibiotic substance benzylpenicillin, Penicillin, from the mould Penicillium notatum in 1928. Penicillin is an antibiotic or group of antibiotics produced naturally by certain blue molds, and now usually prepared synthetically.…

Snails play an important role in the forest decomposition process and they also contribute to soil nutrification through their decaying bodies, shells and faeces. Their dead shells can form a source of calcium for other animals in habitats that don't have a lot of calcium. Snails recycle forest nutrients and are prey for a lot of vertebrate animals and other invertebrates. Their preference for fungi can also be a factor in fungal spore dispersal.…

So why are these fungi important to us today? Looking at the California drought heading to the third consecutive year, many farmers from California is facing problems due to lack of water. A recent report from the federal department of Agriculture states that 20 percent decline in California crops and a 35 percent decline in cotton this year. This is not only concerning for the farmers, but as well consumers as there has been a 3 percent increase in fruit cost, and 2 percent increase in vegetables. Greater demands on water with booming population and decline of water use for farmers caused by environmental laws has created even more problems, and increased research on how we can create crops with less water use.…

MYCORRHIZAE AND FORESTRY What is Mycorrhiza: Albert Bernard Frank (1885), in his study of relationships between soil microbes and plants, introduced the Greek term ‘mycorrhiza’, which means ‘fungus roots’. Mycorrhizas are highly evolved symbiotic association between roots of most higher/vascular plants and certain specialized soil fungi (Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Zygomyectes) that colonize the root cortex during periods of active plant growth both in the natural environment and in cultivation. This is a non-pathogenic peaceful relationship because on one side fungus provides nourishment to the plant and on the other side, it obtains the necessary carbohydrates and energy from the host plant. Types of Mycorrhizae :…
