Introduction Defining health may be one of the most controversial topics in health care. This is because there are so many aspects to health, and so many battling opinions on the overall definition, that it sometimes makes it difficult to decide which definition is the most correct. Why is it so challenging to define health and understand the meaning of this seemingly simple word? The answer is clear: health is an evolving concept. (Pender, 2002) As we learn more about health and human development, health definitions need to be more complex, and account for many more aspects. Diversity in one’s social values and norms, would create varied definitions on the matter, and therefore, understanding your own perspective of health is vital.

Health to me, has many different aspects, and is much more than a physical well-being. Dunn, (as cited in Pender, 2002, p.8), described health as being a multidimensional aspect including “Individual wellness, Family wellness, Community wellness, Environmental wellness, and Societal wellness.” It is important that services are provided to the community to provide overall wellness. As a Nurse, they have major opportunities to serve as role-models in demonstrating what health promotion is, and by providing services related to the promotion of health. (Pender, 2002) Health promotion can also relate to a strategy that is responsible for educating individuals and communities, that leads to the promotion of good health. Public Health Ontario describes the process of Health Promotion as “promoting health, behaviours, creating supportive environments and encouraging healthy public policies….. may occur in settings such as workplaces, schools, clinics, and communities with partnership and capacity building across multiple sectors and diverse …show more content…
It would be greatly contradictory for a nurse to be accentuating the importance of health to their clients without considering it, and practicing it in their own lives. Based on an academic journal article published by Eva Brunner and Olivia Kada, the significance of nurses practicing health promotion in their own lives is important, and nurses play a major role in promotion of health. For example, the Austrian Health Care and Nursing Act stated in 2006 that, “Nurses are required, by law, to promote health to their patients.(as cited in Brunner, 2011, p.17). Understanding health promotion as a nurse is significant, because they are in a position in which they can affect people to change bad habits in their lives, due to the health education that they possess.
