The outpatient facility I am going to discuss is pediatric primary health care facilities. Pediatric primary health care is an outpatient facility that deals with the medical care of children from birth to adolescents up to 18 years old. The most important provider in a pediatric primary health care facility is the pediatrician. A pediatrician is a primary care doctor who only sees children, and specializes in the physical, emotional, and behavioral needs of children. A pediatrician does physical exams, makes sure children are meeting developmental milestones in growth, skills, and behavior, gives children the recommended immunizations, diagnoses illnesses, injuries and infections. All effort should be made to make the children as comfortable as possible by providing a therapeutic environment. Although the needs of outpatients are less intense than those of hospital inpatients, an individual’s visit may still be very stressful (Carr, 2011). This statement is extremely true, in a pediatric office, for children because they have anxiety about strangers. Not only should the personnel be friendly but the pediatric office should be inviting as well. This will help the children feel comfortable and willing to talk to the pediatrician. Using bright and cheerful colors, friendly artwork, and stickers of popular characters on the walls further comforts the children. In the waiting room, amenities such as fish tanks, gardens, and waterfalls are great ways to promote a peaceful atmosphere. Views of outdoor spaces, nature scenes, and using natural light also keep the parents and patients calm, while in the waiting room. The exam rooms should also have artwork and bright colors to ease the child’s anxiety. A reduction in the child’s anxiety aids in a successful exam by the pediatrician. Administering medication and shots are somewhat easier when a child is calm. Insulation between the walls should be used to ensure the child’s privacy when discussing information with the parents.
