This was a fun exercise to wrap up the term. With this presentation, I tried to hit a topic that is near and dear to my own career aspirations in optometry. As I have stated in several posts over the term, optometry (like dentistry or even public health) is a vastly underrated field of medicine. And with my long-term dream of getting into pediatric optometry and working with children with visual impairments, I saw an opportunity to bring the eyes and community health assessment into one project. Largely due to more accessible data sources and information, I found this project was achievable with minimal difficulty compared to the prior exercise.

I would need to rehearse this a few times and tweak some of the things I say. However, I do think there is enough in this presentation that it could gain support from other parties interested in joining the campaign. Virtually every parent will do just about anything to give their child the best chance at success and a better life. Vision is an integral part to child development and as such I ascertain that if parents and other adults, like teachers, are better educated and aware of eye health and readily available resources, efforts to reduce childhood visual impairment would be immensely strengthened. Some may not consider child eye health a frontline priority in public health and healthcare, but I think there is enough in this presentation to counter those thoughts. Vision is one of the requisite senses in life. It is even more important during development because so much of what we as humans learn is visual. Most children with ocular issues do not know they have a problem because they do not know anything different. The longer these problems go undetected or untreated, the worse the eventual outcome in most cases. When parents and teachers start to understand that and are trained to see the signs suggesting a child may have eye problems, they will be much more apt to join the fight in reducing the rate of visual impairment in children and adolescents.
