I was fortunate enough to visit and participate in a group performance at this historic site, in honour of the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbour attack. While visiting this monument, I learned about the significance of this attack on the American soil. In the Pearl Harbour attack, USS Arizona was the biggest casualty. When it was bombed, it exploded and all the 1,177 officers and crewmen on board were killed. Part of the ship still remains in the bottom of the Pearl Harbour. The monument provided a symbol of the fallen, as well as a museum for the war, containing items such as a decoder, similar to the ones used by the US to decode intercepted telegrams. Along with these objects the museum contains replica’s of battleships, as well as the Japanese air carrier that brought the planes that destroyed many aircrafts, as well as cost many lives. The main attraction of this monument is the memorial designed by Alfred Preis. This memorial consists of a landing and a 186 foot long hallway that can fit 200 people at any given time. This memorial is considered an active US military cemetery, as many survivors choose to have their ashes spread across the USS Arizona, or placed inside the wreck by divers. The attack on Pearl Harbor was seen as the most one-sided aerial attack that the US had experienced at the time. This attack is also considered a result of failure in communication, as well as the misinterpretation of radar signals.
