December 7, 1941, was a very important day. The attack on Pearl Harbor lead to the death of thousands, and pulled the United States into World War II. Why was that location so significant? Did other naval forces play a big role in the war? Pearl Harbor was a very noteworthy event, and other warships also had a major impact on society during World War II.
Why are boats interesting to me? I have been boating for as long as I can remember. Kayaking was and still is something that brings my family together. In 2012, I was fortunate enough to go to Honolulu, Hawaii. I went the beach and ate pineapple ice cream, but the coolest part of our trip was visiting Pearl Harbor. In fact, Evidence supports the use of boats in Flores close to a million years ago. These prehistoric boats are believed to have been carved out of tree trunks. Since then we have adapted our building methods to be better suited for different purposes. They were being used for trade, transportation, and even combat by Herodotus’s time (Boat).
Warships come in all shapes and sizes. Aircraft Carriers, for example, are ships that carry vehicles like planes and helicopters, or aircraft. Destroyers, and their slower, yet tankier counterpart, the battleships, were used as escort ships. Submarines were useful for hiding underwater and sneaking up on opponents. There are many other types of boats, but these are the general ships used in World War II (List).
Rising conflicts between the United States and the Japanese Empire meant that Japan needed to be ready for war. They attacked Pearl Harbor because many U.S. ships were harbored there, giving them the opportunity to destroy or at least damage a large portion of America’s navy (Why). In the end, the surprise attack lead to the incapacitation of several ships and hundreds of planes. Nearly two and a half thousand lives were lost, and there were about a thousand more people injured (Pearl). Unfortunately for the Japanese Empire, however, the attack wasn’t highly advantageous strategically, with little of the navy receiving permanent damage, and some vessels …show more content…
