As a student nurse who has clinical experience working alongside nurses, I disagree with the statement that nurses are frequently described as poor communicators.
People have often said to me “You wouldn’t want to become a nurse if you didn’t care”, which is very true as nursing is the ultimate caring profession. However, I believe that it is human nature to care no matter what profession you are in. I do believe however, that effective communication skills are vital and are more essential in a nursing profession more so than any other profession outside a clinical setting. It is these communication skills that help build a good patient-nurse relationship. This is an essential part of the healing process and treatment, and helps provide the best quality of life possible for each patient individually.

I have seen each nurse be kind and courteous which helps (put the patient at ease) win the patient over and is the start to building that strong patient-nurse relationship. I have learned from my clinical placement and from working with nurses that effective communication cannot exist without being able to first listen to the patient and secondly being able to process the information and act accordingly. Effective listening is a complex skill and it involves all senses not just the ears and will result in the patients feeling valued and acknowledged.
