Patient Abuse In Health Care

Abuse can take on many forms. It occurs to those who are most vulnerable and dependent on others for care (Pozgar, 2016, p. 417). Chapter 13 introduced us to patient abuse. “Patient abuse refers to the mistreatment or neglect of individuals in the health care setting. (Pozgar, 2016, p. 417). We were presented with many cases of child and senior abuse. The chapter identified the signs of abuse to look for and what the proper reporting requirements of healthcare providers are. The poem at the end of the chapter particularly stood out to me. The poem was primarily directed at nurses. Its intent was for nurses to see beyond the current state of the person in front of them. Rather than seeing a “lifeless person”, it was a reminder for them

Every nurse has the opportunity to make a positive impact on their patients and the nursing profession on a daily basis through the use of advocacy (Tomajan, 2012, Abstract section). Advocacy plays a significant role in nursing and must be demonstrated to give patients a voice when they are unable to express themselves to protect the patient’s safety and well-being. Throughout the novel A Nurse’s Story, Tilda Shalof actively demonstrated advocacy regarding her patients, which enhanced her qualities as a nurse. Advocating for a patient improves the quality of their stay at a health care facility and increases the likelihood for the patient to utilize health care services in the future. When working in a care setting, especially with service users with physical disabilities, workers need to acknowledge that the service users are vulnerable to abuse. This is because people with physical disabilities are so much more dependent on care givers to supply them with the support they need in order to live clean and healthy lives. Two of the main types of abuse that care workers will face when working with vulnerable and disabled service users are physical abuse and neglect. NSPCC (2015) states that physical abuse is deliberate and unlawful physical contact that causes harm to the victim, whether the damage caused is intentional or not; it can happen to men and women of all ages. Physical abuse usually ends in the victim suffering…

With the elderly population growing every year, and there being no signs of it slowing down, the subject of nursing homes should gain the interest of many Americans. In the history of nursing homes, abuse has been happening since nursing homes have originated. The statistics from 1970 show that majority of people in nursing homes were being abuse or neglected in some type of way. Back then there was no regulation on who worked at nursing homes; anyone who wanted a job as a certified nurses aide could just walk in and apply without any previous knowledge on how to take care of people with complex needs. The government added a restriction with the hopes to reduce the abuse, and passes a law in which you had to have one hundred hours of training,…
