A pathological fracture is a broken bone that has been weakened by a disease. The weakened bone breaks much easier than a healthy bone. This can be caused by diseases such as cancer or osteoporosis. A traumatic fracture is a broken bone that has been caused by force. This can occur from a car accident, sports injury, fall from a great height, or physical abuse. Pathological fractures are coded in the musculoskeletal category of ICD-10-CM based on the underlying cause. Subcategory M84.5 is used for pathological fractures in neoplastic disease. Traumatic fractures are assigned ICD-10-CM codes in chapter 19 based upon the anatomical location of the fracture as well as the type of fracture. Traumatic fractures can be open or closed. Some
