Pat Solitano Movie Essay

The movie character I am choosing to study is Pat Solitano from Silver Linings Playbook. In the beginning of the movie you, learn that Pat is seeking help in a Maryland mental health institution. Pat has experienced trauma that affects him throughout the movie. Pat is married to a teacher named Nikki. One day he came home to his wedding song playing on the stereo. Nikki’s clothes along with another man’s pants were strung out all throughout the house. The clothes led to the shower. Nikki is cheating on Pat with another man. The male teacher told pat that he should probably go. Pat proceeds to take the matter into his own hands and almost beats the man to death. This is why Pat is in the mental health institution. Bipolar disorder can be caused by exposure to environmental stressors. The most common examples of environmental stressors are abuse, a significant loss, or any traumatic event. In the movie, I believe that the cause of Pat’s bipolar disorder is Nikki. His symptoms started to show when he lost Nikki. Every episode Pat had related to Nikki in some way. A trigger for his bipolar disorder was their wedding song. Realistically, bipolar disorder can be severe or mild. It can also be long-term or with irregular episodes. The amount of episodes a person experiences in their lifetime depends on their lifestyle and the triggers that set them off. The prognosis of bipolar disorder depends greatly on the amount of treatment the patient receives. Research has shown that patients who receive treatment improve and are able to fully recover or cope with the disorder.
