The artist believed that there is a tremendous amount of pressure due to of all of the consumer advertisements and the pressures on individuals to become “middle class” citizens, whatever that is. In her abstract she states, “We are consistently pressured to strive to live the material lives of those with incomes ten and twenty-fold of our own”. There are also other aspects presented which the artwork is addressing. When I think of horses, I instantly think of a native scene or a country setting. Three or four horses are present; two are running wild and the other two are being ridden by a man and a woman. Horses, in my opinion, display a calming affect, which is why I found it peculiar for a horse to be centered in the midst of chaos between the fox and the dogs. When the artist was asked what the significance was of the horse standing among the dogs and the dead fox, she responded, “I was concerned with creating a tableau. I want frenetic activity of the hounds to be balanced by the calm dominance of the horse”. In addition to the horse scene, the rabbit scene also displayed a calming yet disturbing effect within the gallery. In my mind, the rabbits were displayed hopping through a field or meadow creating the calming effect. In an attempt of creating a disturbing effect, the rabbits could be hopping throughout the forest and being hunted one by one for their furs; they could be hopping to escape whoever the hunter.
