The United States commenced without parties, but then later on, parties emerged and became powerful. The “first” party system was considered not strong enough because it was the first. The second party system surfaced around 1824, it’s distinguishing characteristic was that political participation resulted in a big phenomenon. The main institutions of the American party system is interest groups and the political machine. The role of interests groups is to influence public policy, they do so in various ways, such as, grassroots activities. Decentralization results in greater variety of interests groups.
