Participatory Ergonomics Case Study

Abstract. The main barrier in implementing Participatory Ergonomics in Indonesian tin mining companies are concluded as a difficulty in communication among roles (owner, manager, and worker), workers’ negative attitudes towards and lack of knowledge in the use of personal protective equipment. The study reveals some identified problems and possible solutions to those specific problems in communication, culture, and knowledge. The study suggested that regular working safety dissemination through a kinship approach and specific safety training to resolve communication, cultural and knowledge issue problems. Empowering workers and supervisors by provide a clear roles and tasks, time and resources are also suggested.

Results

3.1 Communication
At the communication theme, three problems were identified and two suggestions appeared as possible solutions were addressed to the identified problems that proposed by participants.

• Ignorance to safety talk messages that lead workers work without safety rules.
• Workers have difficulty to understand safety information because they are low educated.
• Managers have difficulty to understand owners’ expectations. • Dissemination of safety - dissemination of information about safety in working regularly and actively by involving stakeholders.
• Kinship discussion - discuss safety problem solutions with familial, openness, clear and firmed.

3.2 Culture
Five problems were identified and three suggestions appeared as possible solutions were addressed to the identified problems as shown in Table 2.
