The first amendment states that the government cannot prohibit the free exercise of a religion, the freedom of speech or of the press, and the right for people to peaceably assemble. The first amendment is so important, because each citizen should have the right to say how they feel, to an extent, without being punished for it. Religion is different all over the country and nobody should be restricted because of their beliefs. There are some religions or cults a little different from the rest that go a little further than the rest, like killing themselves because a comet is flying over and they think it is their only gate to heaven, but if that is what they believe in they should not be restricted from believing it. The last big part to the first amendment about how people have the right to peaceably assemble is also very important. There are a lot of things going on in the world these days and not everyone may agree with it, but they also might not know how to deal with it. Some things in the popular opinion should rightfully be peacefully protested against, but some should not be; like the members of the Westboro Baptist Church that goes to military funerals and protests, but is at a safe enough distance to not get in trouble for it. 240 years ago the ways of life were significantly different than how it is now. The Constitution has been so successful since it still serves the people well and protects the rights of the people. There are many possibilities for change in the Constitution, but as the country and government start becoming more modern the rights may be changed. Not too many countries have kept their original documents this long, so it is very impressive for the United States.
