Promoting a Positive Learning Environment
Some Students in the class are just coming to school for the first time therefore some students do not know the letters in the alphabet. Motivating these students to identify letters I had to involve the entire class and we did a whole group discussion. Learning segment 1(one) I encourage a deeper level of engagement with letters by use of pictures. Danel will then be asked if he knows the names of all his friends in the class. I taught the lesson in a whole group to get everyone involved but I also had students in small group as well. The flashcard of Danel’s classmates name will be put away. Students knew if they change a letter the sound of the word changes. With prior knowledge from the ABC song and zoo phonics Danel was better able to know the phoneme of each letter sound. This helped him in learning segment 2 where he had to change the beginning letter to make rhyming words. Danel now knows that the words in a story make up a language. This lesson went ok. After several practice examples and me re-teaching him what rhyming words are and that rhyming words have the same ending he still displayed some difficulty. However, he was able to pick up on it. With continuous prompting he showed a good understanding of rhyming words. What was most important was that he seemed to have enjoyed the matching game. He made mistakes several times; however, I noticed that he was saying the word over and over to himself. He was then able to self-correct himself. Overall this lesson went over good and was very helpful. I will continue to practice rhyming word so that he will be able to grasp the information
