The father in the poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” waltzed his son, who was still clinging to his shirt, off to bed (Roethke). It is common for parents to tuck in their kids at night, and this father is doing it. Instead of feeling neglected, the little boy is getting the love and care he deserves from his father. The father understands that it is his responsibility to provide love for his son, and he does not neglect that duty. However, an example of a bad parent is when Jeannette’s mom throws a tantrum once a week and refuses to go to work. The kids had to get her up and out of the house in time to carpool to school (Walls 196). Since Jeannette’s mom did not take on full responsibility as a mom and teacher, the kids were forced to grow up faster. They should be enjoying their childhood by playing with other kids their age. Instead, these children had the responsibility of making sure their mom gets up in the morning to go to work. As a result of an irresponsible mother, the children had to earn money by working at various jobs. Therefore, she should be responsible for her own actions and provide a role model for her children. Good parents should have certain characteristics such as being supportive, teaching values, and taking responsibility. Being supportive will send a positive message to their children, letting them know that they will be there to help whenever trouble arises. Teaching children values at an early age helps better prepare them for their future. Also, responsible parents are role models for their children.
