Parachute Down Into Safety

She was dressed for the cold December day in a black pea coat, sunglasses and a purple scarf. Back and forth the woman walked from the financial aid office to the bursar back to financial aid and then to the law library. Looking at her phone, then to a piece of paper she was holding and mumbling to herself as she walked from the offices back and forth. This repetitive process continued for about ten minutes. As the student realized that mainly all of the office’s had closed at 4:00 PM and it was now 4:10 PM she entered the financial aid office seeking help for her problem. She approached the desk and asked for help with her issue.
“I’m looking for the admissions office, I think they can help me with my problem there, but I also think I need help with my financial aid. Should I come here first or go over to admissions?”

After the student visited the financial aid office that day with mental health symptoms, the office has now implemented safety procedures that every worker must complete. Forms include listing any mental health problems that they might have and there are code words that workers can instant message to each other in case of an emergency. Students in need of counseling can visit the Counseling and Consultation Office located in the Campus Life building room 200.The office provides individual and group counseling. The Counseling office has a crisis service for students who have mental health emergencies/crisis situations, after hours service is included. The service provides numerous helpful resources for students that also include: advocacy services, mental health services and consultation services. The American Psychological Association reports that 21 percent of students have severe mental health concerns and the other 40 percent have mild mental health
