The male lead in the film, Quentin (Q), is a mix of flaws and excellent characteristics that make for an unusual protagonist, and his development throughout the movie strikes awe. Margo could be called a selfish/self-centered girl who worries about nothing more than herself and how she feels, until mulling over her paper metaphor. Margo states that her surroundings are paper people, paper homes, and a paper town where she never ran into anyone who cared about something meaningful. She is at the same time saying that all those things are fake and lack validity of being real, which yields a question of what makes Margo so unique? It might be hard for one to swallow that pill seeing as Margo was the most popular girl in school and soon to be prom queen, but that is what makes this so unique.
