Papa Johns is currently expanding the footprint of its stores with adding additional stores and appears to be in a growth stage. Over the last few years, Papa Johns has increased its exposure and marketing efforts to become the official pizza provider of the NFL and numerous other sports and celebrity figures (Peterson, 2015). Papa John’s currently is running commercials that feature a wide variety of athletes that are helping sell pizza along with custom pizza boxes in certain areas (Bailey, 2015). Marketing and advertising drives results in an extremely competitive industry that primarily consist of two divisions, full-service restaurants and limited service restaurants. Recently Papa Johns has taken on automation with a system called FOCUS, with a large investment in a point of sale platform that improves order accuracy and increased speed. Tony Thompson COO described FOCUS as “a technologically advanced system designed specifically and uniquely for our model and will continue to support store-level productivity and profitability" (Kelso, 2014, para.15). Another critical area for sales is the mobile platform and in 2014, Papa John’s hit the 5 billion mark in online sales which is roughly half of all domestic orders (Kelso, 2014). While competitors like Dominos is diversifying with sandwiches and Pizza Hut has the YUM portfolio and brand Papa John’s is all in on pizza (Lutz, 2015). In 2015, Papa John’s announced that it would be creating healthier options and nutritional information online for its products for more health conscious consumers (“Papa John’s Introduces”, 2015). In addition in summer of 2016 “Papa John’s will be the first national pizza chain to pledge removal of antibiotics from its grilled chicken pizza toppings and chicken poppers” (“Chicken on Papa John’s Pizzas”, 2015, para.5).
